Highlights From the Rogue 99 ~ Super Tortas DF

[dropcap size=big]W[/dropcap]atching Justino Gress assemble his torta cubana, a super-loaded Mexico City-style sandwich, behind the greasy stained window of his food trailer will have you second-guessing every sandwich you’ve ever made. Every fold, cut and layer of deli meats, cheeses, hot dogs, a chorizo omelette, avocado, vegetables, chiles and an ultra thin milanesa is precisely set on the special custom-made bun that’s produced by a local baker to minimize the girth of this beast of a sandwich. The rest of Justino’s menu draws from Mexico City classics like the Suisa (Swiss-three cheeses), lambada (pork leg, egg and chorizo) and the oaxaqueña (ham, hot dog and cheese), all well-seasoned and served on delicious bread that’s soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside.

Perhaps stranger is their presence in Germany, where Latinos comprise less than 0.05% of the population. But how did we get here?

Four Places to Eat and Drink Your Way Through Mexican Independence Weekend In L.A. (and Long Beach)

Despite L.A. being the home of the second largest population of Mexicans—that counts Mexican-Americans as well, by the way—after Mexico City, it has never been known to go as hard for actual Mexican Independence Day on September 16th as it does for Cinco de Mayo. But these four places are going all out!
