Sean Maung’s Family Portrait Studio ~ Opens Thursday

THESE DAYS presents Sean Maung's Family Portrait Studio, an installation that will recreate the sort of portrait studios formerly found all over the United States, where families went to pose for special photographs that became family treasures. Sean's versions of these photographs (see examples below) use some of the stylistic cues you may remember from your youth, but with his distinct style and aesthetic. Portrait studios still exist, but their impact in the era of digital photography is diminished, and styles have changed to emphasize natural locations. The artist reminds us that this folk art form created lasting images, and however staged or artificially posed they may appear, captured something meaningful.

You can make an appointment or walk-in, and for a small fee have a portrait session with Sean. Included in the sitting will be the option to choose a custom background for the photograph, including a backdrop painted by Los Angeles street artist Bandit, or select from various digitally rendered glorious masterpieces. Print packages will be available for purchase.

The installation will also have a "Zine Bodega" which will include many rare Sean Maung zines, as well as a variety of Mexican porn and other unique treats. It's only open from August 11-14th so make your plans now, this is a one-of-a-kind event and it's sure to be packed. More information available here.
