[dropcap size=big]O[/dropcap]ctober, arguably our prettiest month in Los Angeles, brings more than long shadows and crisp nights (not to mention that rarefied light found nowhere else on Earth). It also brings an opportunity to go after what you want. October belongs to the Hunter. Both the Orion Meteor Shower (October 9th) and the Fall Hunter’s Moon (October 13th) support getting what you want from life and bringing it home. The only obstacle is your own hesitation. Luckily, two Moon -Jupiter alignments bring fearlessness (October 3rd and 31st). Break from self-imposed conditioning and take a risk.  This harvest will not disappoint.

Aries (March 21 – April 20)

Shoot for the Moon this October, Aries. A lunar alignment with lucky Jupiter activates your House of Transformation. (It happens twice, once on the 3rd and again on the 31st.) Good karma ripens through fearlessness, and the Fall Hunter’s Moon brightens your Karma House mid-month. Lean into self-inquiry and avoid the temptations of blaming others (October 13th). The Hunter’s energy maxes out on the 21st, when the Orionid Meteor Shower blesses your Income House. Enjoy financial relief. Your ruling Mars aligns with the Moon in your Professional House on the 26th. Hard work pays off. And don’t pay attention to office gossip, just keep your head down and keep doing your thing.

Taurus (April 21 – May 21)

Is there room in that yoke for two, Bull?  October is all about partnership. The month begins (and ends) with a Moon-Jupiter alignment on the 3rd and again on 31st. Lighten your days with a little help from a friend. On the 10th, the Taurid meteor shower polishes your Here and Now receptor. Recognize the miracle of this moment, the great beauty of our city and the real power of love. Status is enhanced on the 21st with another Meteor Shower. (This time it comes from Orion the Hunter.) On the 30th, Venus and Mercury align in your Professional House, giving you good ideas at work. Your best ideas will benefit the whole community.

Gemini (May 22 – June 21)

The Twins make it official this month when Gemini’s Marriage House is activated by a Moon-Jupiter alignment. (It happens on the 3rd and again on the 31st.) In astrology, marriage represents any life commitment, not just the traditional union. Whatever it means for you, remember, it takes fearlessness to break from tradition.  On the 13th, the fall Hunter’s Moon shines in your Friendship House. Reflect on your role in your community. What do you contribute to the tribe? The hunt continues on the 21st, when the Orionid Meteor Shower illuminates the boundary between the inner you and your outer persona. Merge these identities. Own your higher self and your imperfections. It is a diamond’s flaws that make it sparkle, otherwise you are looking at a cubic zirconia.

Cancer (June 22 – July 22)

The Crab celebrates wellness this October when the Moon aligns with lucky Jupiter in your House of Health on the 3rd and again on the 31st. Help the healing along by taking care of some emotional needs - physical health can be a mirror for your mental state- and neglecting one impacts the other. Education is emphasized on the 10th. Is there a new skillset you need?  Name your target and take it down. On the 13th the Hunter’s Moon shines in your Education House (again). Reflect on lessons learned (and lessons ignored). The Orionid meteor shower on the 21st brings this point home. Get schooled this month Crab, in a good way.

Leo (July 23 – August 22)

Valentine’s Day may fall in February, but October brings love to the Lion. A Moon-Jupiter alignment activates your House of Love on the 3rd and again on the 31st.  The love is so big it transcends human hearts and spills right into the city. Love the long shadows and clear days. Love the late season butterflies in Elysian Park. Love the (finally) uncrowded beach.  The Fall Hunter’s Moon has you reflecting on transformation (October 13th). Love is the ultimate hunter – let it take you down. The Orionid Meteor Shower activates your Career House. Hard work and service are rewarded. The New Moon supports the Lion’s wallet. It lands in your Personal Income House. Feel the love in your wallet.

Virgo (August 23 – September 22)

Feel the warm fuzzies at home, Virgo’s happy place, all month long. October is bracketed by a Moon-Jupiter alignment in your Home and Family sector on the 3rd and again on the 31st. The Fall Hunter’s moon has you thinking about Partnership (October 13th). Strengthen positive relationships. On the 21st the Orionid Meteor Shower brightens your Career House. Are you getting everything you want professionally? Ask yourself what you enjoy, and follow the fun. Virgo hosts the New Moon on the 27th. Rise above pettiness and gossip. Model love for those around you.

Libra (September 23 – October 22)

Pipe down, everybody – Libra has something to say. The Moon aligns with Jupiter in your Communication House on the 3rd (and again on the 31st) bracketing October. Say what you mean and say it out loud. This alignment supports fearlessness, and karma is on your side. When the Fall Hunter’s moon shines in your Partnership House (October 13th) reflect on your role in the tribe. Self-inquiry is your strength this month. The Orionid Meteor Shower supports Higher Education (October 21st). Identify and procure the skills you need to achieve a goal.  Libra hosts the Venus-Mercury alignment on the 30th, supporting grace in expression. October begins and ends with your eloquence.

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)

The Scorpion’s October is focused on money. A lucky alignment in your Income House (on the 3rd and the 31st) sees the Moon pairing with Jupiter. Break from emotional conditioning regarding money. You are smart enough to figure this out. Inspiration comes on the 13th, when the Hunter’s Moon shines in your Marriage House. (Marriage is not necessarily literal – it could represent a new commitment to an employer, a trainer or yourself.) Hard work is rewarded on the 27th, when the New Moon supports community building. Teamwork makes the dream work. So, no matter how tempting, avoid criticizing others. It doesn’t build the dream.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)

Your ruling Jupiter lays claim to October, Archer. It aligns with the Moon in your Subconscious House (on the 3rd and again on the 31st) and good karma and well-being dominate the month.  Sagittarius hosts the Moon-Saturn alignment on the 5th.  Avoid old patterns of attachment and don’t make speeches in your head. Enjoy a vivid imagination mid-month when the Hunter’s Moon shines in your Work Sector (October 13th). Reflect on your job. What do you like about it? What are you good at? Follow your fun. It translates into better engagement. The New Moon supports status on the 27th. Appreciate your well-earned reputation.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 20)

The Sea-Goat parties it up this October. Friends are wealth and a Moon-Jupiter alignment (on the 3rd and again on the 31st) brings your crew together all month. Good vibes dominate your Autumn. October 5th, your ruling Saturn aligns with the Moon in your Karma House. You’ve come a long way, and should be proud, but it’s time to drop some emotional baggage you carry around. Nostalgia is bullshit when your present, immediate life is so rich. The Hunter’s Moon on the 13th highlights communication. Truth is the basis of love.  Speak both to yourself before lecturing others. Close the month with a New Moon in your House of Religion (October 27th). Even as your heart blossoms, remember that every path is sacred. Respect others’ privacies and predilections.

Aquarius (January 21 – February 19)

October improves professional status for Aquarians. The Moon and Jupiter align in your Work House twice, once on the 3rd and again on the 31st, bestowing fearlessness. Go get what you want. The Moon is at its farthest point – both from the Sun and Earth- October 10th when in lands in your constellation. Do you have a misunderstanding of freedom? Your roles are your release. Lean into responsibility and blossom. When the Fall Hunter’s Moon lands in your Personal Income House on the 13th, that side hustle of yours starts bringing in money. Envision your next move. The month ends with a New Moon in your Joint Income Sector. Enjoy the energy (and benefits) that teamwork delivers. You are finally getting good at money. Take heart, Water-Bearer.

Pisces (February 19 – March 20)

Get your pencil out, Pisces. October gives spiritual homework to the Fishes. Lucky Jupiter aligns with the Moon in your House of Religion twice (on the 3rd and again on the 31st). When in doubt, love as hard as you can. Pisces hosts the Hunter’s Moon on the 13th. Reflect on what you want and plan to get it. All of that inner work you are doing, however grueling, opens the door to more happiness. October ends with a beginning – a New Moon in your Partnership House (October 27th) encourages collaboration. Start a new project (providing its fun) and enjoy the camaraderie. Why should kids get all the playdates?

Ophiuchus (November 29 – December 17)

The Snake-Bearer has a rockin’ October. Lucky Jupiter aligns with the Moon in your constellation at both the beginning and end of the month (on the 3rd and again on the 31st). Celebrate good vibes all month long. The alignment activates your House of Karma (the good kind).  Everyone around you benefits from your high spirits. Name an objective on the 13th, when the Hunter’s Moon lands in your Health Sector. Take heart - you will be given the insight you have been waiting for. Orion supports your cause on the 21st when it brightens your Joint Income House. End the month with a New Moon in your Friendship Sector (October 27th). Your crew loves you and attachment goes both ways.

Tamal or Tamale? How to Correctly Pronounce the Singular Form of Tamales

The tamal vs. tamale debate has an almost emotional connection with people simply because it becomes a “how my family speaks the language vs. how it’s ‘supposed to be’ written” type of language conflict. In a culture like Mexico, where family always comes before anything, it makes sense that people will go with what feels familiar rather than what they are expected to say.

More Than 70 People Reported Feeling Ill After Eating Oysters At L.A. Times ‘101 Restaurants’ Food Event

Ragusano is disappointed that the L.A. Times didn’t publicly disclose that there was an outbreak at their event. “Obviously they’re not going to print it in their paper,” Ragusano said. “But they‘re a newspaper and newspapers are supposed to share the news. This is how people usually find out about something like this,” she added. “It's ironic because it happened to them.”
