L.A.'s music scene is on fire, with producers of every stripe creating music that hits clubs all over the world pretty much immediately. New to LA is the duo VELCRO, who craft 90's House influenced dance floor bangers with an edge. Velcro is Enrique and Kevin, and we caught up with them for a quick Q&A.
First things first: What's your favorite taco?
There is an amazing place called Gilberts in Santa Monica
You recently moved to LA from SF. What brought you south?
Enrique: Well, honestly I got somewhat bored of Frisco and wanted a new vibe and I've always been into old school westside rap and just wanted to see what everything was about!
Kevin: I just moved to LA after school about a year ago but im originally from the Washington Dc area. LA just seemed like the spot. I love New York but I think LA has alot more to offer for this scene.
Who/What is Velcro? What is your sound and what are you trying to express with your music?
Enrique: Velcro is just us 2 dudes diggin on oldschool 90's house vibes, But of course with influences of todays music built in. I guess if we were trying to express something with our music it'd be to show everyone and let them realize there will always be soul and life to music in any decade no matter how new or old a song is.
Kevin: What he said.
Who are your inspirations and influences, musical or otherwise?
Enrique: First off all our homies that produce music and are going places with it. From a "fans" standpoint we listen to a lot from lables like Hypercolour and Unknown to the Unknown and artists such as Bicep, Urulu, Justin Jay, Todd Edwards, Dj Godfather, and so on.
Kevin: I have to credit my parents as one of my biggest influences, they have been playing stuff like Mark Ferrara and Portishead for me since I was a little kid. We didn't eat a single meal at my house without listening to kind of lounge music.
Do you have a favorite venue in LA to play? Or to see a show?
Enrique: To play not too much, but if I had to choose I'd say the Jerry Lewis room in the Avalon. It feels like a house party with all of our DJ friends and randoms walking through. To see a show, I think we'd both agree on Los Globos. It has such a sweaty weird, crazy vibe to it. Also if you stay late enough, right around 2am all these old asian people come out of the woodwork and just party til 7 in the morning.
Kevin: Id love to play for a packed house upstairs at Los Globos. So weird and way too many lights, my kinda place.
Albums you could not live without?
Kevin: Portishead - Dummy
Enrique: Circa survive - Jurtuna, and i think we both agree on J Dilla - Dilla Donuts.
What's next for Velcro?
Enrique: HOLLYYWWOOODDDDD, nah i think whats next is just what everyday life has been like, making music and playing shows.
What music or song do you love that would surprise people?
Enrique: wow, ok here it goes, the whole trapped in the closet video series by R. Kelly
Kevin: Dr. Octogon- Halfsharkalligatorhalfman
