Preview: 15 Years of Hamburger Eyes at Slow Culture

MICHAEL_HERNANDEZ

It's hard to think of a zine or publisher more influential (to us at least) than Hamburger Eyes. Ray Potes' creation has always managed to bring you something you've never seen before, and always with zero pretense. From its early days as a xeroxed zine to the current incarnation as a publisher with many titles showcasing amazing photographers from all over the world, Hamburger Eyes has always been important but never stopped progressing. Kudos to Slow Culture for opening their new space with a display of 500+ photographs ranging from 8" x 10" to 4’ x 6’. All were exclusively selected for this show.

50 + photographers will be exhibiting, including, but not limited to:
John Oliver Hodges, Uri Korn, Brian David Stevens, Ray Potes, David Potes, Mark Murrmann, Megan Cullen, Michael Hernandez, Stefan Simikich, Ted Pushinsky, Dennis McGrath, Alex Martinez, Jai Tanju, Valerie Jocelyn Bower, Elmo Tide, Keith Sirchio, Oskie Mendoza, Andrea Sonnenberg, Michael Jang, Lele Saveri, Bill Daniel, David Uzzardi, Ben Gore, Daniel Arnold, Jesse Pollock, Kappy, Troy Holden, Luis Mendoza, Sean Maung, Jerry Hsu, KC Ortiz, Jason Jaworski, Ricky Adam, Ed Templeton, Deanna Templeton, Tobin Yelland, and Bill Burke.

Hamburger Eyes 15 Year Anniversary “CYBERNETICS”
Opening Reception: February 5th, 7-10PM Exhibition Dates: February 5 - December 11, 2015

NF4

LOS ANGELES - Slow Culture Gallery presents Hamburger Eyes “CYBERNETICS.” A retrospective photography exhibi- tion celebrating 15 years of independent publishing. On display will be 500+ photographs ranging from 8" x 10" to 4’ x 6’. All exclusively selected for this prolific show.
CYBERNETICS is the scientific study of control and communication in animals and in machines. It seeks to develop gen- eral theories of communication within complex systems, whether those systems be mechanical, physical, cognitive, bio- logical or social. Cybernetics is a meta-theory that is relevant when what is being observed incorporates a closed-signal- ing loop, in other words, where action by the observed generates some change in its environment and that change is re- flected in that system in some manner that triggers a change.

Friedrich von Schiller, wrote in “Letters on the Aesthetic Education of Man, 1795”
The transition from a suffering state of sensuality towards an intellectual activity, will not happen except through a middle state of aesthetic freedom. ... There is no other way to make the rational part of our mind sensible, without being illustrated in a previous state of aesthetic energy.
This is a common theme for Hamburger Eyes, exploring the relationship of human brains (neurological systems) and ma- chinery (mechanical systems), namely cameras and laser copiers, to capture and store recordings.

Street Vendors Successfully Sue City to Remove Illegal ‘No Vending’ Signs And Won

L.A. will also have to reimburse the street vendors for their past fines relating to this controversial sign. However, this does not include any other fines related to equipment restrictions or lack of permits. This also means that while a vendor can’t be cited for vending in areas like the Hollywood Walk of Fame anymore, they can still get cited for other city regulations.
