TacoWire: BirriaMania Postponed and You Can Always Order Your Tacos To Go

As you street food fanatics know, pandemics and watery skies have a way of impeding the plans of taco stands, mass gatherings, and outdoor pop-ups. But remember, you can always order your tacos to go. Nonetheless, please stay tuned to the social media feeds of all included in case something should affect their operations from appearing this weekend. In our continuing mission to support the purveyors of the taco lifestyle, here is your weekly Tacowire.

After much deliberation, we have decided to postpone our BirriaMania event. Please stay tuned to our BirriaMania Instagram account for further updates and our new date.

MichexGod

MichexGod, which long operated as a michelada-stocked San Fernando Valley food truck, now has its own brick-and-mortar restaurant in Sylmar. Cocteles, aguachiles, shrimp tacos, and tostadas mixtas are available to match with your mariscos-laden miches.

Unknown Kitchen

Unknown Kitchen is now open in Brentwood. The Vietnamese restaurant, which helped out Wahoo’s Fish Tacos out of its misery on Wilshire, serves soft shell crab spring rolls, filet and brisket pho, short rib pho, shaken beef, papaya salad, and beer, among other delights.

The Bad Jew

The Bad Jew, a pastrami sandwich pop-up from chef Rebecca King, will be at Santa Monica Brew Works on Sunday, March 15, starting at noon. She’ll be teaming up with Meathead BBQ on smoked meats, weather permitting.

City Farmer's Street Papas

City Farmer’s Eddie Rodriquez will be cooking street papas tonight at Alex’s Bar in Long Beach. The menu includes potato confit with grilled cheese, topped with salsa negra, fermented jalapeño, chipotle cream and your choice of meat. Meanwhile, the Mummies and Thee Cormans will be playing a sold-out show.

Papa Pancho’s Tacos

Papa Pancho’s Tacos is popping up every Saturday at Lokels Only in Downtown L.A. The menu has beer-battered fish and shrimp tacos, a deep-fried avocado taco, a deep-fried papaya taco, and the “HoodFoodie” burrito combining its battered fish and shrimp with asada and a mango pico de gallo inside a spinach tortilla. Please, Hammer... don’t hurt ‘em.

Tacos El 19

Tacos el 19 is now open Tues.-Sun. in Long Beach. The truck serves tacos al vapor with asada, labio, cachete, cabeza and pollo on handmade tortillas, as well as burritos, quesadillas and asada fries. It also offers birria de res every Sunday.

Birrieria Tijuana hits North Hills

Birrieria Tijuana is now open in North Hills for tacos, mulitas and tortas with birria de res.

Mariscos Kikas is now open and serving San Bernardino. The restaurant has a big menu, full of dishes like aguachile, camarones a la diabla, octopus tacos, and surf n’ turf quesadillas.

Pono & Piha is popping up on Saturdays at Tiki Ti in Silver Lake. Expect creative Hawaiian dishes like oxtail loco moco, truffle poke with pork rinds, fried shrimp in macadamia butter, and “everything” musubi with fried Maui onions and lox. Owners warn that they might get rained out.

The Westside masa specialists at Masienda have introduced state-of-the-art, stainless steel and basalt-integrated industrial molino for grinding nixtamalized corn into masa. Priced at $1,550, the Molinito is clearly not for your average home cook, but if you can swing the cost and swear by the Taco Life, then handle.

Tacos el Tapatio Flies South

Tacos el Tapatio, which sells its “Guadalajara-style beef barbacoa” in City Terrace and Downtown, is opening a location in San Diego’s Barrio Logan today. The stand serves tacos, vampiros, mulitas and quesadillas on tortillas hechas a mano, as well as cheesy burritos.
