Interview with Piper Kaplan of L.A. Band Puro Instinct

image1

Puro Instinct is native Angeleño sisters Piper and Skylar Kaplan. Rather than describe their music you should just give it a listen (SoundCloud embeds below). Puro Instinct will open up for Blackbird Blackbird on Wednesday January 28th, as part of Red Bull Sound Select Presents: Los Angeles. The show is only $3 if you RSVP here.

What's your favorite taco spot in LA?

Hmm.. that's tough! Probably Tacos Azteca on Verdugo Rd in Glendale..

Did you grow up in Los Angeles? Which part? Best childhood memory of LA in those days?

Yeah- Sky and I grew up in Hollywood down the street from Guitar Center.. I think as a kid I really loved driving around Hollywood and seeing Angelyne zip by in her pink corvette or Dennis Woodruff trying to slang scripts out of the trunk of his car..

How has your live show come together through the years, and how do you describe it now?

We used to have like 17 people in the band but all of them had kids or moved away so we went back to the 2-piece format and so far it's working out!

On the visual art side, who are your influences? What art inspires you?

We love the L.A. punk art collective Asco a lot.. Also really dig the work of the Russian punk artist Sergei "Afrika" Bugaev, Paradjanov, Vivienne Westwood, Marjorie Cameron, Angelyne ...

I really like the way your music has evolved in the last couple of years, was that a natural progression, or were there any crystal moments where you knew you were on to something new?

Thank you! I think that once we started working on songs in our bedrooms again it kind of made it easier for us to get intimate with the ideas and vibes we wanted to explore without feeling any time or financial constraints...

Do you have lucky numbers?

11:11, 3.14159999999

If you could live in any era of Los Angeles of the past, when would it be?

Definitely Hollywood in the 20's and 30's!!
