Dia de la Independencia ~ Puerto Vallarta, Mex.

2810.jpg

As sorry I was to miss the Banksy Barely Legal show last weekend, my priority was a family birthday in Jalisco, fortunately putting me in place to rage in Puerto Vallarta centro zocalo for El Grito, celebrating Father Miguel Hidalgo's historic call for independence in Dolores, Mexico in 1810, leading to the eventual overthrow of Spanish and Creole colonial forces in 1821.

The rain, coming down in sheets and flooding the streets couldn't stop the cumbia beat. We danced, we sang, we poured beer on our heads, stumbled down the street, narrowly missed a catfight (video to come), and fortunately stayed outta jail ourselves. Unlike the Day of the Virgin Festival we remember a couple Decembers back, the elaborate fireworks tower did not set any palm trees on fire... "enough safe and sane, it's time for dumb and dangerous!"

!Viva Mexico pinche cabrones!

Many come and buy pounds and pounds to share with their family members as soon as they taste a warm “taco de sal,” a tortilla sprinkled simply with salt and rolled up like a thin flauta. It’s common to eat tacos de sal while waiting in line at a tortillería in Mexico, but not so much in the U.S.

Halal Beef Chorizo, Pastor-Spiced Chicken Shawarma, and Tahini Salsa at Lincoln Heights’ Brand New Mediterranean-Mexican Spot

The restaurant is barely a month old. The owner is the daughter of an Egyptian father and mother from Mexico City, so having guacamole and salsa with her kebabs was a natural thing for her. “I grew up with the privilege of having both of them in the same household,” she says.
