Compton Woman Killed in Apparent Street Race During Weekend Filled with Hit-and-Runs

10:11 AM PDT on May 13, 2019

[dropcap size=big]D[/dropcap]ramatic video footage shows the moment a 23-year-old Compton woman's vehicle was impaled by a speeding car that appeared to be in a street race with another vehicle in South Los Angeles Saturday. The woman, Bethany Holguin, was killed immediately on impact and the driver of the other car got out and fled the scene in the vehicle of his racing counterpart.

The scene was just one of several hit-and-runs to plague the Los Angeles area in recent days.

A man was in custody in after he allegedly fled the scene of hit-in-run on the 91 Freeway in Corona, where a woman was killed after she got out of her car to check on a dog. A La Puente woman was recovering from a car crashing into her bedroom late Sunday night. That driver fled the scene on foot. And a week ago, the Highland Park community was shook by the loss of two brothers who were killed in a hit-and-run car crash.

The apparent street race incident occurred in a residential area of the Willowbrook neighborhood at the intersection of Towne Avenue and 131st Street. Holguin was driving through the intersection when the speeding vehicle blew past a stop sign and slammed into her vehicle. Holguin is a mother of two, according to KTLA. Residents in the area told KTLA that drag racing there is common and that it would not stop until "we speak up."

In Corona, a woman was pulled over by the side of the freeway early Monday morning helping a friend's dog when she was struck by a man driving a pick-up truck. The man attempted to drive away but only got about 500 feet from the accident before abandoning his vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol. He was arrested later at his home in Riverside. A CHP sergeant told KTLA he believes alcohol was involved.

La Puente resident Grace Fierro was thrown from her bed when a 2013 BMW crashed into her bedroom. According to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, the driver of the BMW lost control and went through a cinder block wall before landing in Fierro's bed room. She was not badly injured in the incident. The driver of the car is believed to have fled on foot.

A week ago Sunday, brothers Benny Felix-Zuniga and Jesse Felix-Zuniga were headed west on Pollard Street past San Pascual Avenue in Highland Park at around 1 am Sunday morning. The brothers were in a Ford Fusion that was hit by a Chevy Silverado, according to the LAPD. Police are still looking for two people who fled the scene after the crash.
