CBS Los Angeles reports that the place where Beaudette was shot has experienced unknown gunfire before. Journalist Melissa Tatangelo said last year she was camping in the same place and heard a gunshot at around 5 a.m. In a Facebook video she posted about it, she said er car had been hit with a bullet.

In May, 52-year-old Francisco Reynaldo was stabbed not so far from the campgrounds in the unincorporated Santa Monica Mountains.

Beaudette was a scientist that worked for a pharmaceutical company and lived in Irvine. He was camping with his two-year-old and four-year-old girls, according to the Los Angeles Times. His kids were not hurt.
