Journalist Melissa Tatangelo said last year she was camping in the same place and heard a gunshot at around 5 a.m. In a Facebook video she posted about it, she said er car had been hit with a bullet.

In May, 52-year-old Francisco Reynaldo was stabbed not so far from the campgrounds in the unincorporated Santa Monica Mountains.

Beaudette was a scientist that worked for a pharmaceutical company and lived in Irvine. He was camping with his two-year-old and four-year-old girls, according to the Los Angeles Times. His kids were not hurt.
