Daily Memo: A Push for ‘Quieter’ Immigration Raids and An Increasing Use of Force at Detention Centers

We are also exactly a month away from June 6th, when the Border Patrol arrived in Los Angeles and began the raids that terrorized so many around the country.

Welcome back to the Daily Memo, where we break down immigration raids in Southern California and share relevant news from around the nation. Below, you'll find links and references to topics discussed in our Instagram video and more, allowing you to take a closer look at each one. If you appreciate reporting like this, please consider becoming a member, buying some merch, or donating to our fundraiser so we can continue bringing you this vital information.

We just published one of the hardest, longest, and most heart-wrenching projects in the history of L.A. TACO, what we internally referred to as “The Death Tracker.”

It is 71 pages dedicated to the 64 immigration related deaths since the Trump administration took over. It’s not just a list of names; we spent months looking for these people’s back stories, to re-humanize them and share the truth alongside what the DHS reported or failed to report. We have 46 stories of those who have died in custody, 9 during enforcement operations, 6 after being released from ICE Detention, 2 during mass shootings, and 1 by an off-duty agent. Their stories are now on lataco.com

Thank you to every single person who’s a member, purchased merch, or donated. You believed in us, and we put in the work.

—One Year Anniversary of L.A.'s Immigration Raids: We are exactly a month away from June 6th, when the Border Patrol arrived in Los Angeles and began the raids that terrorized so many around the country. And while that style of raid under the former disgraced Border Patrol chief Bovino has died down, the raids have not stopped; they’ve only changed.

—Pushing for "quieter" raids: As the new head of the DHS, Mark Mulling said recently, he’s pushing for "quieter" raids, the kind that likely won't draw media attention, which is losing support for the GOP and Trump. And Border Czar Tom Homan recently said that in the next couple of months, escalation is coming again, or as he puts it, “You ain’t seen shit yet. This year will be good. Mass deportations are coming.”

And as they continue to take people from their check-ins, court appearances, or while driving to work or to drop their children off at school, people are being placed in camps where the administration is worsening conditions.

—Increasing Use of Force at Detention Centers: The Washington Post just confirmed what we already know about how widespread and increasing the use of force is occurring in these privately run detention centers. Trump also just closed the office that provided oversight against these kinds of abuses, and at the same time, hired a firm accused of torture to track down undocumented children. ICE has already detained more than 6,200 kids in Trump’s second term.

—ICE Raids Are Still Happening Across Southern California: The raids still continue all over Southern California. In the last several days, ICE has been pulling people out of their cars, mostly work trucks, in Anaheim, San Bernardino, Rialto, Fountain Valley, and Oceanside, and walking through traffic.

In Fontana, ICE agents forced a man and a woman into their vehicle early in the morning. In El Sereno, they were chasing someone through a residential neighborhood. And in Bell Gardens, they sat on someone with their full body weight for several minutes as they detained someone and threatened the community coming out to document. According to reports, agents pepper-sprayed community members, who responded by spraying agents with the water hose.

ICE was also seeing staging near a school in Pico Rivera. ICE is still breaking windows to grab people out of their cars and waiting to racially profile people being released from jails. These are just some of the incidents we have documented.

All the confirmed immigration enforcement below.

[Monday, May 4th, Day 333]

  • Linda Vista: In an undisclosed neighborhood and time. ICE agents took one man. Community watchers were on scene afterward and discovered his abandoned vehicle with broken windows.
  • Fontana: On Oleander Ave, around 7:00 a.m. ICE agents were seen taking a man from a residential area.
  • Anaheim: La Palma Ave and Blue Gum St, around 8:30 a.m. ICE agents took a man from a parking lot in an industrial area.
  • Grantville: On 10350 Friars Rd. Community watchers confirmed ICE agents staging behind a CVS.
  • Bell Gardens: On Clara St and Jaboneria Ra, around 11:30 am. ICE agents were seen taking one person. According to a social media post by a resident, ICE agents were pepper-spraying some community members, so they water-hosed the agents.
  • Pico Rivera: On Lindsey Ave and Catherine St, around 8:19 a.m. At least three confirmed ICE vehicles were seen scouting in the area.
  • Chula Vista: At the Chula Vista Mall on 555 Broadway, Suite. Community watchers stated that Border Patrol agents took six people from a parking lot at the mall. L.A. TACO spoke with Arturo Gonzalez, who stated this might have been due to a “smuggling attempt.”
